our challenge

According to the latest World Drug Report in 2020, 284 million people between the ages of 15 and 64 were estimated to use/misuse substances, with 13.6 percent of them developing a substance use disorder. Consequently, the number of those having such substance use disorders rose from 27 million in 2010 to 38,6 million in 2020, while from 2009 to 2019, there has been an increase in drug-related mortality of 17.5 percent. Substance abuse is a daily battle in our homes as it is related to the high incidence of gender-based violence and femicide; in our communities it relates to crime; in our workplaces as it relates to performance and accidents, on our roads it relates to road accidents; in our schools it relates to dropouts and bullying and in our hospitals, it relates to other illnesses and accidents. We must strengthen protective factors in order to safeguard current and future generations from the numerous risk factors linked with substance use disorders by focusing on a continuum of care from promotion, prevention, treatment to recovery.

Message from Conference Chair

SANCA National is hosting the second ADDICTION 2023 Online Conference from the 28 to 29 June 2023 in partnership with International and National stakeholders. The ADDICTION 2023 Conference is our next key opportunity to bring together different perspectives and solutions. Through the inaugural ADDICTION 2021 Conference, we have successfully ignited the movement for change. It is now time to advance this movement by taking ownership and being accountable as people of this beautiful country.

Rev. Jannie Smith  - National chairman of SANCA National

SANCA has identified the gaps and barriers to prevention and treatment services. Through the resolutions taken at the ADDICTION 2021 Conference aims to close these gaps in prevention and treatment of substance use disorders as confirmed in the World Drug Report (2022). The ADDICTION 2023 conference aims to resolve these resolutions in partnership with the academia, clinical practitioners, prevention specialist and treatment experts from across the World.

I am inviting you to contribute your voice to advance the movement for change.
