If you have, odds are you got the impression they're either not legitimate or are way behind the times. The same rule applies to the professional world. When you meet a potential collaborator, apply for a job or a grant, chances are, someone is going to look you up online - and when they do, you want them to find your personal brand conveyed through a polished online presence.
