The stigma connected to substance use disorders (SUD) is hiding the extent and severity of the problem.
The SUD epidemic is costing countries, medical aid schemes, companies and families millions in ineffective treatment of concurrent disorders and societal problems.
Only a true collaboration between all prevention and treatment role players can create effective, evidence-based solutions relevant to SUD in the unique African context.
The ADDICTION 2021 Conference will be an independent international platform for collaboration from all sides of the treatment community in creating comprehensive intervention strategies at the individual, community and societal level.

The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) has been dedicated to the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug dependence since its inception in 1956. SANCA is also one of the key implementing agencies of the Department of Social Development in South Africa.
As a non-governmental organisation SANCA is responsible for raising funds to support its 29 centres in provinces across South Africa. Any proceeds from the ADDICTION 2021 Conference will be applied by SANCA to:
- advocate for the adoption of resolutions taken during the event,
- turn existing data from SANCA centres into insights that can be shared with the entire treatment community, and
- build capacity in the SANCA treatment centres.

Symbols
The conference logo signifies ‘Unity is Strength’ – the core belief that drives the design of the ADDICTION 2021 Conference. This logo is about coming together, igniting the movement for change.
By combining strengths, the treatment community can bring substance use disorders out of the darkness – represented by the gray in the logo – into light – represented by the orange.
This shape of the logo portrays four people not defined by gender, race, age, religion, location, preference or dependence. They come together with stretched out arms to embrace each other and arms stretch upwards to signify hope, joy and the celebration of life and possibilities.
The ADDICTION AWARENESS ribbon will be launched at the ADDICTION 2021 Conference. The ribbon symbolises the collective effort to move from stigma to solutions in the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders.
